SSD’s, right now, are good for two things. Incredibly fast boot ups, and rugged machines. Laptops for the average klutz would benefit from an SSD, but not much else. Those that want ultra-fast response from their OS’s might install it on an SSD, or have media waiting on an SSD, but honestly, not all that useful now considering the cost.

There is also the issue of SSDs being worn out by too many write cycles. Although flash memory is getting better, it still will not last with a full operating system as long as a hard drive. Hard drives may crash, but they don’t wear out with use. I doubt desktops and servers will use them for a long while.

@Nick; That’s a very important point that I forgot to mention in the article. MLC SSD’s are rated for a smaller number of write cycles but SLC based SSD’s are better suited for high performance applications like servers and desktops. I’m sure by the time SSD’s go mainstream they will be better suited for the user in respect to that problem.
