I have one major addiction in life… I love to build computers.
It doesn’t matter what kind of computer it is - a new quad core with SLI graphics cards, an old box that I am turning into a media server - I love rummaging around in my parts bin and buying new components that come together to do something.
When I built my first pc 7 or 8 years ago, it was quite a process. Newegg’s review/customer feedback engine wasn’t quite as robust as it is now, so you had to really rely on specs. That resulted in a lot of returns and wasted time trying to get a computer running.
Now though, there is a website that helps you along that path. It’s PCincubator.
PC Incubator basically pulls all of the most reviewed products on Newegg.com for a specific category. For example, the case in the pic above is the same one I have. It has over 2000 reviews and is one of the best computer cases I have ever worked with.
As you check off the list, it adds your total up and then you can go purchase your setup from Newegg.
There are a couple things I like.
- The first is I hate to forget something. If I am planning a weekend Home Theater PC build and I forget the Blu-Ray drive, I am going to be pissed. That means I have to go pay Best Buy prices or suck it up and wait for another 3 days.
- The second is the use of reviews as being the major buying factor. Typically, if something has a lot of reviews, I will buy it because I know I am getting a quality product. It usually doesn’t matter what the price is as much. So reviews are necessary to me.
The bad thing about the site is it only shows you 3 possible items for each category. If you want to see more you have to go the Newegg.com itself. Not that that’s a bad thing, but I would love to see an AJAX-y widget the expands the selection for me!
Truthfully, this isn’t something any hardcore computer modder is going to want to use. But if you like the idea of building a cheap PC for your 42″ flat panel in your living room - this is a nice start.

Newegg is too expensive. I just use cyberpowerpc.com to configure, then use directron.com to buy.
